From the Gorge to the Great State: A Love Story in Motion
Life has a beautiful way of writing new chapters when you least expect it. For Carlos & Melissa, that new chapter began with a move from the lush landscapes of Oregon to the vast, sun-soaked heart of Texas.
What inspired the change? The chance to start fresh—not just in a new place, but as future husband and wife. Becoming Texans felt like more than a relocation; it was the beginning of our next great adventure.
We weren’t sure what to expect when we arrived, but what’s surprised us the most is just how quickly Texas began to feel like home. There’s a familiar warmth here that reminds us of the small-town charm of Hood River—the kind of hospitality that makes you feel welcome from day one. Our love has grown deeper with every new memory we’ve made under these big skies, and we’re eager for what’s still to come.
Where did your love story begin?
Our story began in a small, unexpected place—a Mexican restaurant where we both worked. What started as coworkers quickly became friendship, and eventually, something much more. We held off on dating because we knew that once we did, there’d be no turning back. From our first shift together, when we passed the time doodling on each other’s hands with ballpoint pens, we felt something different. It was silly and sweet, but also a sign of the laughter and joy that would come to define our relationship.
If we had to describe our love in three words, they’d be: playfulness, endearment, and admiration.
Carlos
We’re constantly making each other laugh, whether it’s with silly voices or spontaneous tickles. That playfulness often ends in a kiss or an “I love you”—small reminders that we’re each other’s safe place. And above all, we admire each other deeply. As an extrovert and an introvert, we balance each other. We lift each other up, each strong where the other is learning. That mutual respect strengthens our bond every day.
What do you admire most about your partner when no one’s watching?
There are quiet moments that define our relationship, too—the ones no one sees but mean everything. For me, it’s Melissa’s smile. There’s a sincerity in it that lights me up and makes me feel like the luckiest person alive. For her, it’s Carlos’ unwavering love for the people in his life. His loyalty and dedication to his family and friends are unmatched—a reflection of the kind of partner and future father he’ll be.
After nearly six years together, we’ve walked through life’s highs and lows side by side. The challenges we’ve faced—both personally and within our families—have only made us stronger. It’s in those moments of vulnerability that we’ve truly seen one another. Not just the good, but the raw and real. It’s in those moments we’ve learned what we need, and what we can let go of.
